Why Cleaning Your Water Tank Matters
Your water tank stores the water your family drinks, cooks with, and bathes in every day. Over time, sediment, algae, and bacteria can build up inside even the best tanks — including Roto tanks. Regular cleaning ensures your water stays safe, clean, and fresh-tasting. Experts recommend cleaning your tank at least once every 6 months.
Signs Your Tank Needs Cleaning
- Water has an unusual smell or taste
- Water appears cloudy or discoloured
- You notice green or black algae growth inside
- Sediment or sludge at the bottom of the tank
- It has been more than 6 months since the last clean
What You Will Need
- Clean scrubbing brush or mop
- Bucket and hose
- Food-grade disinfectant or diluted bleach (1 teaspoon per 10 litres of water)
- Protective gloves
- A helper (for larger tanks)
Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Roto Water Tank
Step 1: Empty the Tank
Turn off the water inlet and drain the tank completely. Open the outlet valve or use a pump to remove all the water. Never clean a full tank.
Step 2: Rinse the Interior
Use a hose to rinse the inside walls and bottom of the tank. This loosens sediment and makes scrubbing easier.
Step 3: Scrub the Walls and Floor
Using a clean brush, scrub the interior walls, floor, and around the inlet and outlet fittings. Pay special attention to corners and the bottom where sediment collects. Do not use soap or detergent — it is very difficult to rinse out completely and can contaminate your water.
Step 4: Disinfect
Mix a food-grade disinfectant or diluted bleach solution and apply it to all interior surfaces. Leave it for 30 minutes to kill any remaining bacteria or algae.
Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the tank at least 2–3 times with clean water until there is no smell of disinfectant remaining. Drain completely after each rinse.
Step 6: Refill and Inspect
Refill the tank and check for any leaks around fittings. Your water is now clean and safe to use.
Tips to Keep Your Tank Clean Longer
- Keep the lid tightly closed at all times to prevent insects, dust, and sunlight from entering
- Install a first-flush diverter if you use rainwater harvesting
- Check inlet filters regularly and clean or replace them as needed
- Position your tank away from trees to prevent leaves and debris from contaminating the water
- Roto tanks are UV-stabilized, which helps prevent algae growth caused by sunlight
